Facebook Chat, Google Gtalk Intergration Coming Soon

A year back Facebook had announced that they were building a XMPP interface for Facebook Chat. Which is the same protocol that Google has used to build Google Gtalk, Google’s popular Instant messaging service. Process One’s bot IMTrends has detected that Facebook has implemented the Jabber/XMPP Protocol.

So what is XMPP? XMPP formerly called Jabber, is a messaging protocol based on XML. The Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an open technology for real-time communication, which powers a wide range of applications including instant messaging, presence, multi-party chat, voice and video calls, collaboration, lightweight middleware, content syndication, and generalized routing of XML data. Unlike most instant messaging protocols, XMPP is an open standard. Like e-mail, it is an open system where anyone who has a domain name and a suitable Internet connection can run their own XMPP server and talk to users on other servers. The standard server implementations and many clients are also free and open source software.

This is big new this means you’ll be able to chat with Gmail and Google users. This means Google users will be able to interact with Facebook users using the same IM Chat clients. Which means you’ll be soon able to use Facebook chat on any of your favorite instant messaging desktop or web based clients.

Goog and Live 411

Both Google and Windows Live has released their own 411 service. If you don’t know what a 411 service please click HERE. There are demos for both Live 411 and Google 411. However, I think that Google 411 is better. Once again, like all other Google services, it is very easy to use. Whereas, with Live 411, you are asked to reply to what seems like a zillion questions. Both services are free to use.

OpenSocial, OpenBox, OpenMedia What the Hells Going On?

A few days back google announced OpenSocial, its so called open API for social networks. Box.Net today annouced the launch of OpenBox, a platform for developers to integrate their web applications into Box.net. And Bebo announced Open Media platform, a way for media brands to build a presence in the community with music and video content.

Readwriteweb author Marshall Kirkpatrick rightly questions is Google Exercising Leadership or Control? I happen to think this is all about gaining control. Google, knew very well that they were incapable of creating a social-network that would become as big as MySpace or Facebook which is evident from the failure of Orkut which has mostly been dominated by Brazilians and Indians(take a look at the public stats page you need to be signed into Orkut to view it). The growth of facebook over the past months has show how opening up a platform to developers, can have a exponential/big impact on on how users use their services.

And suddenly we have API coming up every where. The fact is most of these API aren’t really open and are mostly tied up to their own platform or are severely restricted in terms of usage.

Today Google released the Android code and I took a serious look at its internals… and found the solution for the licensing problem. Itâ€™s called Dalvik and itâ€™s the new name of Sunâ€™s worst nightmares.

Dalvik is a virtual machine, just like Javaâ€™s or .NETâ€™s.. but itâ€™s Googleâ€™s own and theyâ€™re making it open source without having to ask permission to anyone (well, for now, in the future expect a shit-load of IP-related lawsuits on this, especially since Sun and Microsoft signed a cross-IP licensing agreement on exactly such virtual machines technologies years ago… but donâ€™t forget IBM who has been writing emulation code for mainframes since the beginning of time).

OpenSource Fighting against OpenSource? I guess the GPL wasn’t open enough. Proof that GPL is not a solution for all opensource projects especially for commercial solutions. Google was smart enough to realise not many would invest or touch Android if it was released under a GPL licence. Heck they even have a FAQ about this. Why are you releasing the code under the Apache Software License instead of GPLv2?

Don’t Put All Your Eggs In The Google Basket

When you blog do you blog for your readers or do you blog for Search Engines. I have noticed a lot of people who try to cram in as many keywords as possible into the title and content. Even I have done this when I first started blogging. We know that a number of people and sites have been penalised by Google for example JohnChow, text-link-ads etc for selling paid links. Quite recently a very popular and large website masternewmedia has been penalised by Google for doing paid links. This site is a premium Google Adsense Publisher and also a PR 7 blog.

A few snippets from the author’s site.

For some reason, yet unknown to us, Google has actually penalized all of my web pages, to the point that they could not be found any more for any of the terms for which they were so highly ranked until a few days ago. This is not only disaster from a standard web publisher viewpoint, but it is triple tragedy because the very visitors coming from Google, and not out of their own bookmarks or of a friend recommending them, are the very ones that make my site sustainable.

And obviously, this is so assuming these other sites also don’t get banned or penalized by Google. I am not trying to be paranoid. Fact is that there is a number of posts and articles out there that suggests in fact, that if you are linked by sites that are banned or penalized then your site as well may be penalized itself. While the logic of this is all to be understood, I link first and foremost my own other sites! Therefore it goes without even thinking that all of my sites may risk being penalized if I don’t do everything I can to put myself in safe waters.

So do you depend solely on Google for your Income? People like JohnChow still survived, because they managed to build relationships with their readers.

Remember Readership, Relationships, and Responsibility are more important than Google Juice. Google after all is just a company, they personally don’t care what happens to you. I am not trying to justify paid links (I myself took them down a month back) I am just telling a hard fact.

Google Rolls Out Site Authentication For Adsense

Google now allows you to put adsense on your private forums and website which are accessible only by logging in.

We’ve recently launched a new feature called Site Authentication to take care of this problem. Using Site Authentication, you can give our crawler access to your login-protected pages by passing it information to log into your site. For example, let’s say your news site has a premium content area, with articles that only paying members can access. To get ads on those pages, you can use Site Authentication to provide our crawler with a test username and password. It’s an easy process that starts just by logging into your AdSense account and finding the ‘Site Authentication’ link under the ‘AdSense Setup’ tab. Once you’ve supplied us with a username, password, and a few other details, all you have to do is verify that you own the site through Google Sitemaps.

They haven’t rolled this out to everyone yet.

FeedBurner Now Offers Free Pro Accounts to Everyone

FeedBurner is now offering its PRO services for free to everyone. This includes its Statistics Package TotalStats and MyBrand which lets you brand your Feeds. This comes after its recent acquisition by Google. They haven’t opened up its Ads network to everyone yet though.

Google The Hypocrite

Lets face it Google has a good standing in the geek community. People rarely go after Google. I find it very Ironic that people hold double standards when it comes to Apple Vs Microsoft Vs Google. I like to look at them with a neutral eye. First Google got some really bad PR for ranking the lowest when it comes to piracy. Matt Cutts tryied to defend Google by pointing out the finger on other companies. Most people in the corporate world consider Google as a One Hit Wonder or Vapor ware. The only reason why Google is a top player in the market is because of Search and advertisement.

In its latest Hypocritical move Google has filed a Anti-Trust lawsuit against Microsoft so that they can load their crappy desktop search Program on Vista. Microsoft was good enough to agree with Google and decided to comply with Google’s request, but Google didn’t seem satisfied so they refiled the lawsuit. In the latest turn of event the Judge threw out the case.

A federal judge refused on Tuesday to rule on a last-minute Google antitrust complaint about Windows Vista’s desktop search, saying she trusted government attorneys who said they were already satisfied with Microsoft’s planned changes.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said she would rely on the U.S. Department of Justice and state attorneys to alert her if any further action is needed to address antitrust allegations lodged on Monday by Google that the search function still won’t allow for adequate “user choice.”

“The plaintiffs, as far as I’m concerned, stand in the shoes of the consumer,” Kollar-Kotelly said at a periodic status conference here. She added that Google “is not a party to the case.”

Here’s what what hypocritical about Google.

Why not go after Apple for the same thing, their spotlight works in the same way
Google and Dell load Crapware on your computer
Google hijacks users mistyped search inputs and shows them ads.

Google Docs And SpreadSheets Redesigned

Google Redesigned their online Docs And SpreadSheets Applications it looks really neat and organized.

Here’s what’s new:

Looking pretty – The entire document list has been given a complete visual overhaul – new icons, more content, and better organizational controls. We know users spend a lot of time here and we aim to make it feel more like home.
Getting organized – Almost from the day we launched people have been clamoring for folders. They’re here! Even cooler, our new folders continue to work like the tags they’ve replaced – your old tags are automatically converted to folders and documents can live in more than one folder at a time. Organizing your documents is as easy as dragging and dropping a document to a folder. We’ve also included special controls for seeing only those documents created by you or shared with a particular person.

Google Launches Official YouTube Channel, YouTube Launches Remixer

Google has started an Official YouTube Channel on YouTube. Also YouTube has officially launched YouTube Remixer, a new service that allows users to edit their videos from within YouTube itself. The Remixer is powered by Adobe Premiere Express and supports insertion of graphics, text and audio as well as overlays and in-video transitions. Causal YouTube users will love it.
