I thought I would review and showcase some of the beautiful Icons that I made use of while designing this web site. I redesigned the site a week back and have made extensive use of various icons across the site. All the icons featured on this site are freely available for download and can be used for both commercial and personal use. Some of the icon designers require you to link back to their blog or web site. Using icons while designing your web site, blog or web application not only helps to increase the usability of the user interface by providing visual cues to the user, but also makes your design look more pleasing in terms of the look and feel. Its important that the Icons you use convey the right visual cue to the user. The iPhone is a great example of an application which makes extensive use of Icons. Computer users are very familiar with the use of icons especially the ones that they come across everyday in their day to day use. With the onslaught of so many social networking sites, each brand is now associated with their own colours, logos and icons. Some common examples are Apple, Windows, and Google.

Here are 9 + 1 Icon sets and collections that I used on this site and 1 bonus icon collection that I contemplated using for the design.

Social Network Icon Pack By Komodo Media. These icons are really quite popular and have become common place. Designed by the awesome Rogie King. It contain a extensive list of icons in 16px and 32px for the most popular social networking sites on the internet. These 16px Icons are really crisp and sharp.

The Oxygen icon theme

An Open Source Icon Them, the Oxygen icon theme was initially started by David Vignoni, then a number of other designer joined in to create an Icon Theme for the KDE Desktop. The icons are a collection of different works from different designer. While there is no official download package you can download it from the Ubuntu repository.

CoolWater Two Column Free WordPress Theme

This is another beautiful free CSS XHTML web template by Styleshout that I really liked and decided to convert into a WordPress Template. The WordPress theme design is called CoolWater. As the name suggests this theme is really clean and has a bright punchy look and feel. The Theme is a two column theme and has support for widgets and is supported for wordpress 2.3 and above. The template is released under a Creative Commons license, Please leave the original designers link intact.

FreshMedia Free Two Column WordPress Theme.

Its been a while since I wrote about WordPress Themes. I saw a beautiful CSS and XTHML Template provided by styleshout.com for free. So I decided to convert it into a WordPress theme and release it. Let me know if you find any bugs. The theme is released under the a Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. Please leave the original Web Designer link intact as he has requested on his site. The Theme is a two column template with a large footer and has support for widgets both in the sidebar and the footer.

Reduce Comment Spam To Zero Without Akismet

My blog used to get around 100-300 spam comments/trackbacks a day while Akismet was doing a great job, but as time went by it became very tedious to go through the comment/trackback spam to make sure no legitimate comments were caught. Using a combination of three WordPress plugins and without the help of Akismet I have managed to reduce the comment spam to almost zero. I am also listing a few other plugins.

Plugins for Comment Spam.

Simple Spam Filter for WordPress.

Get Simple Spam Filter from here. Most of the spam caught by Akismet is pretty obvious spam i.e.

Contains 5 or more links to external sites
Contains nothing but links
Contains [url=http://www.example.com]example[/url] style links (my blog does not support bbcode style links)
Contains a word that matches a short list of common spam words (for example, viagra or cialis). See the pluginâ€™s source for the full list.

Simple Spam Filter helps you combat this kind of obvious spam. Its has a setting page where you can tweak it to suit your likings.

WordPress Comment Spam Stopper.

This a very simple Plugin that asks a very simple question that bots are too stupid to answer. I have found it even more effective if you change the default question. Get this plugin from here.

Comment-Policy WordPress Plugin

This is a alternative to Comment Spam Stopper. Instead of asking the users to enter an answer, you ask the user to agree to your comment policy by having a required field CheckBox. Since its JavaScript based most bots won’t see it. Get the plugin from here.

Plugins for Trackback Spam.

Extended Comments Options for WordPress.

While most of the plugins above will take care of comment spam. I found that I was getting tons of Trackback spam, since Trackbacks are not validated by WordPress. Using this plugin you can disable TrackBacks or Comments for your older posts. I have disabled trackbacks for posts older than a month. You can get this plugin here.

Simple Trackback Validation Plugin.

If you don’t like the idea of disabling trackbacks for your older posts you can use this plugin to validate trackbacks.

checks if the IP address of the trackback sender is equal to the IP address of the webserver the trackback URL is referring to.
This reveals almost every spam trackback (more than 99%) since spammers do usually use bots which are not running on the machine of their customers.
retrieves the web page located at the URL included in the trackback. If the page doesnâ€™t a link to your blog, the trackback is considered to be spam. Since most trackback spammers do not set up custom web pages linking to the blogs they attack, this simple test will quickly reveal illegitimate trackbacks. Also, bloggers can be stopped abusing trackback by sending trackbacks with their blog software or webservices without having a link to the post.

Antispam Collateral Condolences.

The last plugin does not combat spam but notifies a commenter in case his/her comment is caught in the spam queue or moderation. I highly recommend this plugin get it from here. Â

How To Access Experts Exchange and Bypass Without Registering

Have you ever been annoyed when you search on Google and click on a link that you find relevant only to find that you need to register to have access to the content. You might be wondering how the content in these sites are indexed when they are not actually viewable this is because these sites allow only the search bots to access the restricted content. I wonder why Google does not penalise site like Experts Exchange for showing different content to users and the Google search bot.

There are two ways you can access content on Experts Exchange without the need to register and and pay for membership to view the content. The first two methods are the the easiest way.

Just Scroll Down.

You might be wondering how scrolling down can help. Experts Exchange were smart enough to figure out that internet surfers have very short attention spans and rarely scroll down beyond a given point. They in fact convince the users they need to register to view the content by showing a large number of dummy comments with text that says

All comments and solutions are available to Premium Service Members only. Sign-up to view the solution to this question.

So the user assumes that the content is only viewable if he/she registers when in fact all the comments and solutions are viewable if you scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Use Google Cache.

This is a no brainer. When you search on Google if you see a link to Experts Exchange instead of clicking on the link directly click on the link below where it says Cache.

User Agent Switcher FireFox Extension.

If you constantly land up on experts exchange or you are tired of scrolling down so much. Use the User Agent Switcher FireFox Extension to spoof your User Agent and make Experts Exchange believe that you are a Google Search Bot. Download a list of User Agents from here and import it using the user agent switcher extension.

Goog and Live 411

Both Google and Windows Live has released their own 411 service. If you don’t know what a 411 service please click HERE. There are demos for both Live 411 and Google 411. However, I think that Google 411 is better. Once again, like all other Google services, it is very easy to use. Whereas, with Live 411, you are asked to reply to what seems like a zillion questions. Both services are free to use.

Free Magazine Style WordPress Themes And More

Its been a really long time since I did by best WordPress theme series. In the last few months there seems to be a new trend catching up. Designers/bloggers seem to be focusing on Magazine style layouts for blogs. I can easily understand why people are attracted towards a Magazine style layout. A Magazine style layout gives more room to showcase content and advertisement, the normal blog layout has been used too often and has been overused. If you notice I tried a bit to incorporate a magazine style layout on my site but my focus was more on achieving a unique layout and to give more focus to the latest post. But lately I have realized that some of my best/quality posts have been buried among my rants and reviews. I was supposed to finish a redesign on this site on October 1st which also happens to be 6 months since I have been blogging. But if you noticed I have slowed down my blog posts. Hopefully before this years end I should have a spanking new design.
