Say Good Bye To Sponsored Themes, Wordpress.com Introduces New Feature

Update: Matt just nuked sponsored themes on the Wordpress Theme Viewers.

Sponsored theme authors had it coming, while I have nothing against sponsored themes, lately the quality of themes being posted on the Wordpress planet have degraded with most of them being sponsored themes. As someone who watches out for good looking theme I am sick of looking at some of the most ugly designs every day. Mark Gosh posted on the Webtoolscollection that they will no longer showcase or blog about Sponsored themes. This is welcome news and a step in the right direction. If only the Wordpress themes Viewer also took the same stand, we could get rid of these sponsored themes and let the quality theme get better exposure.

Wordpress.com rolled out a new feature which is stated to come in the next Wordpress release i.e. 2.3

We have a nice little workflow improvement for those of you who use the Contributor role on your blogs. Contributors can now submit their posts for review by an Editor. When Contributors are done editing their post, they press the “Submit for Review” button to put the post in the Editor’s pending review queue.

This will be useful for multi-author sites or for contributors.

I’m not sure if I agree 100% with you on this one Arpit. I agree that there are a lot of terrible themes out there. Luckily not many of them are used (well not on the blogs I read at least). If people doesn’t like the sponsored themes they can pick another theme. I can’t blame the developers if they want to make some coin out of their work.

Jeremy from Shoemoney has his own theory on why this is happening. I’m sad to say it sounds very plausible.

@dennis Like I said I don’t have a problem with sponsored themes. But we need to keep them out of Wordpress official sites like the codex and Theme Viewer and WTC. Most SEO and Marketers are abusing the system using sponsored themes.

I am not a fan of Mr. Shoemoney I heard one of his podcasts a while back were he interviewed some SEO dude. The guy was discussing how he running a splogging site pretty successfully Mr. Shoemoney didn’t think splogging was bad and seemed cool while discussing with the SEO guy. I never visited Shoemoney’s blog again.

i agree with you in the sense that i’m tired of looking at crappy themes. sponsored themes aren’t the only crappy themes, and not all sponsored themes are crappy, but they do certainly seem to make up the majority.
so in that sense, i do think it’s good news to see them removed from WLTC.

in the interest of fairness, though, i think it sucks to see them forcibly removed from themes.wp.net (matt’s post). the benefit of the theme viewer is that it’s truly egalitarian. if you can make your theme work, you can have it hosted. it’s barely constrained chaos, i know.

but there are plenty of sites with lists of “the best wordpress themes” that are hand-sorted and hierarchic. moving t.w.n towards a hierarchic model means that another theme repository will take over its place as the lowest common denominator.

@adam yeah I think Matt is taking a rather harsh stand, I have already come across more than 3 theme viewers with almost the same number of themes as the official theme viewer. By the way the default Wordpress theme comes with a bunch of sponsored links too ;)

I really wanted to have Review option in the workflow in one of my site… that is a cool feature.
