Facebook Hack : Switch Or Turn Off Facebook Lite To Default

I was using Facebook when I saw the ad on the side recommending me to switch to Facebook lite for a faster and better user experience. So I clicked on it hoping to change back to the regular Facebook interface once I was done with exploring Facebook Lite. Facebook lite is an simplified version of Facebook, that lets you use facebook without the clutter of various Facebook Applications spamming your Wall and Feed. But the funny thing is there was no link anywhere which I could use to switch back to the regular interface. I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out how to Switch off the Facebook Lite Interdface change back to the default Facebook interface. I could see that the URL of the the Facebook Lite page was http://lite.facebook.com/ and when I tried entering http://facebook.com/ it would redirect me back to http://lite.facebook.com/. After a lot of hunting around I found a couple of solutions.

On the top right hand corner before the search box you’ll see two small icons, the first on looks like a spanner click this, this will take you to the facebook lite settings page.

Now click on default site

Select. When I go to Facebook.com, show me, Regular Facebook. and click save you should be done. You also have the option of checking Let me switch between regular Facebook and Facebook Lite If you select this option, a blue bar will appear at the top of Facebook that enables you to switch back and forth between the two versions i.e Facebook Lite and the default Facebook Interface.

Use The Facebook Feeback Form

Scroll way down to the bottom of the facebook lite interface at the bottom you’ll see a small link called feedback click this., You’ll see a new page at the top it will say Looking to get back to the regular Facebook? Just click here. Just click the given link it should turn off the Facebook Lite interface and send you back to the regular Facebook interface.

Other Methods are listed below but not Guaranteed to work.

Change Facebook URL Link

You’ll notice that the Url has changed to http://lite.facebook.com/ just change this back to http://facebook.com/. This doesn’t work all the time you can try to use http://lite.facebook.com/home.php

Clear Your browser Cookies and Cache

Clear your browser cookies and cache and try logging into facebook again, the facebook lite interface should be gone now.
For Internet Explorer users go to your menu bar and click Tools –> Internet Options –> Delete Cookies and Delete Files
For Firefox Users go to your menu bar and click Tools –> Clear recent History –> Select all the options and click Clear all

PipesCamp An UnConference

Both bosky and Mayank contacted me to let me know about PipesCamp a one day Unconference centered around Yahoo Pipes. It will held on December 23rd sunday, 2007 in Chennai, India. Thanks to Bipin who sent me the video by mail. I quickly googled it and found that these are part of campaign that was started by Times Of India (A National Newspaper in India) on theÂ Aug 15th 2007 called “LEAD INDIA” and “INDIA POISED”. Just Got My Replacement T-Shirt From Design By Humans

After I blogged out my disappointment with the T-shirt I ordered from Design By Humans. I was contacted by one of the DBH employees who offered me a replacement T-shirt he was kind enough to ask me for a more detailed feedback as to why I was disappointed. Today I received the T-shirt and I love it.

I ordered the T-shirt titled Music.

Below is the feedback I sent to DBH

Most of the 95% of the Designs are very heavy on Details and colours. If you notice the Threadless guys strike a balance they have both detailed and minimalist T-shirts. Also their heavy detailed designs cover only 60%-50% of the Surface area of the T-shirt which makes the design stand out more from the background, unlike DBH designs which cover 100-90% surface area of the T-shirt which make designs get lost and feels too complicated to make out.
A Visible link on top with more Details about the T-shirts i.e. were/how/why they are printed. Difference between Mixed Media, Specialty Inks, Classic Print? To a layman they sound like jargon.
Show real models wearing the T-Shirt.(or get the community to submit there pictures like Threadless does) Sometimes WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) doesn’t hold true. For example when I looked at the T-shirt above I was expecting a Black T-shirt but it was actually a dark shade of green.

2007 Year Of the Apple Bashing

Apple is the new Microsoft or so they say, 2007 has been a great/bad year for Apple. I am seeing a lot of Apple bashing taking place place, grow up people its just a company. Though I admit it is one of the most tight lipped closed company. Lets see where they seem to be screwing up.

Locked iPhone and iPods. (Apparently according to Apple Safari is a SDK)
The lacklustre launch of leopard, Major Upgrading problems. 300 new features yeah right, take a look and tell me if Descriptive Error Messages, Updated Language Guide, Russian Localization and ripping off Spaces from Linux counts as new features, you know something is wrong with what you are doing when people are hacking your code to make the menu bar opaque.
Hardware problems, System Hangs, Restarts etc. (after paying them a premium for their superior hardware)

I wasn’t aware Apple needed to hire PR people, it gets free press from most of the media journalists and bloggers, they’ll gobble down anything to do with Apple.

A British journalist attempts to ask Apple executive Phil Schiller a question about the effective iTunes monopoly on downloads for the iPhone. Apple’s PR people jump in and try to end the interview, saying how they’re “excited” about the iPhone and “want to stay focused.” The problem? Their body language betrays them.

I never ran this myself, but through a friend of a friend I heard that Apple PR teams are not allowed to communicate internally with one another, i.e. the iPod PR people are not allowed to know what iMac PR people are up to. It is totally divide-and-conquer inside the company.

Externally, you’re also not supposed to cultivate relationships with journalists. It’s the complete opposite of other vendors. In fact, my friend said, if you’re an Apple PR person and you are seen in the company of a journalist, at a party or any place other than an Apple event, you better have a good reason why.

FastCGI for IIS is Released, PHP On IIS Faster Than On Apache

Microsoft has released FastCGI for IIS. Also did you know that PHP on IIS is about 10-15% faster than on Apache(Linux). Here a list of guides to installing Popular Open Source Php Applications on IIS. You can install IIS only If You have Windows XP Professional version. Here is a guide to installing WordPress on IIS, there don’t seem to be any extra steps involved in getting it to run and install successfully. Looks like Apache is in for some tough competition, it has been steadly losing market share to IIS this year and there are other web servers that run PHP faster.

With Microsoftâ€™s implementation of the FastCGI open standard, IT Professionals will be able to host PHP applications on Windows ServerÂ® 2003 and IIS 6 with increased reliability, scalability, and security. Customers also know that they will be able to count on Microsoft to stand by and service the Microsoft FastCGI Extension. By supporting the open standard, Microsoft has made it possible for PHP and other CGI compliant languages to be hosted efficiently and effectively on Windows Server 2003 and IIS.

Apple Numbers

With this whole hype of the iphone, Mac OS X Leopard, new ipods and the new imacs, much of the attention is focused on Apple. Bad luck Microsoft! But has Microsoft released anything in past 6 months? The answer is ‘Yes’ and they are:

Windows Home Server 2008
New Microsoft Zune models
Halo 3
Windows Live services

Since the attention is focused on Apple, here are it’s earnings, market share and sales:

On the Apple earnings call, CFO Peter Oppenheimer cited some research from Strategy Analytics placing the iPhone as the â€œfourth highest selling handset in the U.S. market in the September quarter.â€ (The Motorola V3 was No. 1).

Apple has sold 1.4 million iPhones in a little over a quarter. It took the iPod more than two years to reach the same number of sales. The price cut helped it reach that number, by nearly doubling the daily sales of the iPhone. And Apple says it is on track to sell 10 million iPhones by next year.

Of those 1.4 million iPhones, Oppenheimer estimates 250,000 (or 18 percent) were unlocked to work on networks other than AT&T. (That explains why Apple was so aggressive in bricking those iPhones. Apple only gets paid by AT&T for iPhones connected to its network).

The iPhone starts selling in the UK (with O2) and Germany (with T-Mobile) on November 9th, and in France on November 29th (with Orange).

iTunes has now sold 3 billion songs, and 100 million TV shows.

Appleâ€™s retail strategy continues to power an increasing portion of its sales. In the September quarter, 57 percent of Appleâ€™s sales were direct through its stores or Website, compared to 53 percent a year ago.

I Am Back Online, DCAMP, DNS Issues, MediaTemple and BlueHost

Well its been a really fun and frustrating two weeks for me. Fun because I completely disconnected myself from the computer and Internet. No RSS Feeds, No blog posts, No IM. I went to to Bangalore last weekend with Sagaro and Sid to attend DCamp an UnConference on Design and Usability at Yahoo India, and I had a chance to met a lot of interesting people there like the dezinerfolio brothers Navdeep and Naveen (I told them about the event), PlaneMad (Show him any plane model he will tell you the model number, also most of the maps on Wikipedia for various Indian Metro Cities have been done by him), also thanks to Allagappan (Yahoo Employee) we played foosball at yahoo to kill time before leaving off for the station.

Its been a frustrating week for my site because my web host BlueHost screwed up my DNS settings. I just realized that no web host is perfect or can guarantee 100% uptime. I think I was a bit too harsh on Media Temple my previous Web Host, even though they did screw things up a bit for me. After my move from MT to BlueHost things were fine until I realized that my site was facing some weird problems.

The first week I had no clue what was happening, my site would return a blank page randomly. I contacted BlueHost and they blamed it on WordPress. A bit later I figured out that it was a DNS issue and BlueHost put the blame on GoDaddy my domain registrar. I contacted GoDaddy and they told me it was BlueHost fault. In the end I ended up sending a mail to Media Temple requesting them to clear their DNS cache. By this time I had researched enough to figure out who was at fault (also thanks to Media Temple who told me what was going wrong, props to them for replying to my mail even though I am no longer their customer). The fault was with BlueHost. This time I explained the problem fully to them and they rectified it within a hour. For some reason my Cpanel account did not update my DNS Zone files properly and it was still pointing to my old Web Host Media Temple. So why didn’t I ditch BlueHost immediately and move to “A Simple Orange” as I was planning to. After being hosted on DreamHost, Media Temple and now BlueHost there were two things about BlueHost that I really liked, and was willing to excuse them for the down time.

Fast 24×7 Live chat support. I hate waiting for replies that take more than an hour.
Great uptime and response time. Comparing all the data collected in the past 3 months and also my pingdom Stats for sites on MT, DH and ASO and BlueHost I found that BlueHost was better.

A Few Blog Updates And News

Its been a busy week since the closing of the SandBox Competition. I have been overwhelmed with support emails and feature requests. One things People need to understand is that the SandBox is a Complex theme and you need good CSS skills if you want to tweak it. I have changed my mind and I don’t want to mess around with the core files this would defeat the purpose of the SandBox Theme. I would suggest people looking for support to drop their comments in the sndbx.org forums where there are more people (Experts) available. I wish I had the time to spend and reply to all the comments.

SandPress To be featured in a Book

Lisa Sabin-Wilson contacted me a while back to tell me that SandPress will be featured in her upcoming Book WordPress for Dummies.

I have written the WordPress For Dummies book for Wiley Publishing and am currently in the final round of edits before the book is published. The book is due to be available in bookstores, worldwide, in October 2007.

The Clazh Blog Reviewed in One of India’s Largest National Newspaper

Yesterday my blog was reviewed in one of the largest National Newspaper in India. It was featured in the Sunday’s Edition of Indian Express. You can read the 250 words review here on the online version of the newspaper. The review was done by Arjun Jassal a Science and Technology reporter of Indian Express. I haven’t seen the print version yet. I got to know of it only this evening. The other blogger to get featured along with me was Sakshi.

1. I learnt all my Web Design when I was jobless and unemployed for almost a year. Its all self taught I never liked learning from Books. I am a experiment, trial and error guy.

Sadly they have not updated the APPLE India site with the latest offerings I had to phone up the dealers to find the correct price. I might have to settle for a DELL XPS 1330 or Inspiron 1520. I am going to wait till November or December.

Don’t Put All Your Eggs In The Google Basket

When you blog do you blog for your readers or do you blog for Search Engines. I have noticed a lot of people who try to cram in as many keywords as possible into the title and content. Even I have done this when I first started blogging. We know that a number of people and sites have been penalised by Google for example JohnChow, text-link-ads etc for selling paid links. Quite recently a very popular and large website masternewmedia has been penalised by Google for doing paid links. This site is a premium Google Adsense Publisher and also a PR 7 blog.

A few snippets from the author’s site.

For some reason, yet unknown to us, Google has actually penalized all of my web pages, to the point that they could not be found any more for any of the terms for which they were so highly ranked until a few days ago. This is not only disaster from a standard web publisher viewpoint, but it is triple tragedy because the very visitors coming from Google, and not out of their own bookmarks or of a friend recommending them, are the very ones that make my site sustainable.

And obviously, this is so assuming these other sites also don’t get banned or penalized by Google. I am not trying to be paranoid. Fact is that there is a number of posts and articles out there that suggests in fact, that if you are linked by sites that are banned or penalized then your site as well may be penalized itself. While the logic of this is all to be understood, I link first and foremost my own other sites! Therefore it goes without even thinking that all of my sites may risk being penalized if I don’t do everything I can to put myself in safe waters.

So do you depend solely on Google for your Income? People like JohnChow still survived, because they managed to build relationships with their readers.

Remember Readership, Relationships, and Responsibility are more important than Google Juice. Google after all is just a company, they personally don’t care what happens to you. I am not trying to justify paid links (I myself took them down a month back) I am just telling a hard fact.
