Breaking News Microsoft Announces Release Of Microsoft Surface.

Micorosft just announced the the release of Microsoft Surface. Microsoft Surface™, the first commercially available surface computer from Microsoft Corp., turns an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant, interactive surface. The product provides effortless interaction with digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects. Surface is a 30-inch display in a table-like form factor that’s easy for individuals or small groups to interact with in a way that feels familiar, just like in the real world. In essence, it’s a surface that comes to life for exploring, learning, sharing, creating, buying and much more. Soon to be available in restaurants, hotels, retail establishments and public entertainment venues, this experience will transform the way people shop, dine, entertain and live.

How does Surface work?

At a high level, Surface uses cameras to sense objects, hand gestures and touch. This user input is then processed and the result is displayed on the surface using rear projection.

What is surface computing?

Surface computing is a new way of working with computers that moves beyond the traditional mouse-and-keyboard experience. It is a natural user interface that allows people to interact with digital content the same way they have interacted with everyday items such as photos, paintbrushes and music their entire life: with their hands, with gestures and by putting real-world objects on the surface. Surface computing opens up a whole new category of products for users to interact with.

What are the key attributes of surface computing?

Surface computing has four key attributes:

  • Direct interaction. Users can actually “grab” digital information with their hands and interact with content by touch and gesture, without the use of a mouse or keyboard.
  • Multi-touch contact. Surface computing recognizes many points of contact simultaneously, not just from one finger, as with a typical touch screen, but up to dozens and dozens of items at once.
  • Multi-user experience. The horizontal form factor makes it easy for several people to gather around surface computers together, providing a collaborative, face-to-face computing experience.
  • Object recognition. Users can place physical objects on the surface to trigger different types of digital responses, including the transfer of digital content.

This is really cool. One of the best from Microsoft – thanks for sharing! :)

Now there is a stark resemblance with Apples Multi Touch technology. Remember the part where they enlarge the image with their hands by stretching the edges.
Other than the possibilities are endless. I am totally blown over. Did you know that MS filed a patent (which i believe is on this) almost a month earlier.
Check it out http://www.voizd.com/microsoft-reveals-latest-tehnology-surface

@Bentley If you check the surface website they have been working on it since 2001 so there could be a possibility the iPhone copied from them. Also I remember seeing a prototype of this on Youtube even before all the iPhone Hype

yeah it could be a possibility , but you cant actually compare a sophisticated device with Iphone. After all iphone is starting of mobile revolution and we have much more to come. You cant copying , but can very well use the word inspiration as every device will one or two feature more than the other :-)

yeah I should have used the word Inspired …. anyways both these gadgets are not for the ordinary folks they are good only for drooling over.

What do you mean by “not for the ordinary folks” :-P None the less what is interesting is Microsoft had this thing called ‘Touch Light’ but i was just watching a video over at PopularMechanics.com and all the fellas (incl MS folks) were using the term ‘Multi Touch’. Damn! Aint that Apple’s language?

not for the ordinary folks == Us ;)

yeah you are right :-D .. not us !! to use that .. We really need to spend either one month of salary ( for Iphone ) and i don know how many months salary ( For MS surface ) ;-D hehehe

I can’t buy the iPhone even with a months salary :(

heheheh ..dont be sad ..within few months you will be able to buy 10 Iphones with your one month’s blog income :-D ..

naa I can’t spend that money for expensive toys like these I am saving for a high end laptop :D

The technology is nothing like multi-touch. It uses five infra-red detectors and a projector, projecting onto the back of metal impregnated glass. It does not use any real touch system at all. I think they are going to sell them for upwards of 11,000 USD each.
